I have been studying and writing about American education since 1967. I was born in Houston, Texas, where I attended public schools from kindergarten to high school graduation. I graduated from Wellesley College in 1960 and earned my Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1975. I live in Brooklyn. I write about education, politics, and democracy.
