Dr. Vincenzo Giordano is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at NHS Lothian Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, Scotland, focusing on aortic surgery. Since 2018, he has served as the Cardiothoracic Lead for the National Service of Complex Aortic Surgery in Scotland, where he applies his extensive knowledge and expertise in managing aortic conditions, both medical and surgical. Dr. Giordano’s professional journey began in 2011 when he moved to the UK to join the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. While there, he worked on a wide range of complex cardiothoracic surgeries and developed valuable experience in managing critically ill patients. He also earned certification in Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS). In 2012, he took on a position at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a Specialty Doctor, where he gained further experience in elective and emergency surgeries while also focusing on research in cardiac and aortic surgery. This role allowed him to mentor colleagues and contribute to discussions on mortality and morbidity. By 2015, Dr. Vincenzo became a Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Infirmary, performing surgeries independently. In 2017, he secured a permanent position as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Since then, he has carried out over 1900 cardiac and aortic surgeries, averaging more than 200 procedures annually. His expertise includes a wide range of complex surgeries, such as total arterial myocardial revascularisation, ECMO implantation, aortic valve repair, and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair. He is also involved with the Scottish National Thoraco-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Complex Aortic Service, which specializes in treating patients with complex aortic conditions. In 2020, Dr. Giordano introduced a port-access approach for aortic valve replacement through a mini right anterior thoracotomy, making his center the first in Scotland to offer this method. He has also been involved in the national TAVI program since 2012, overseeing surgical access for the procedure and leading the department’s Quality Improvement Programme, which includes audits and new protocol development. Dr. Vincenzo has introduced the Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) procedure to Scotland, having performed over 70 such surgeries. He is dedicated to educating the next generation of surgeons through workshops and conferences. He is a member of several prominent professional societies, including the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland. Dr. Giordano received his medical degree from the University School of Medicine in Brescia, Italy, in 2005 and completed his residency in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Milano Bicocca. His career includes fellowships at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Medisch Spectrum Twente in the Netherlands, where he gained further expertise in minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Vincenzo Giordano, born in 1980 in Bergamo, Italy, was inspired by his father, a cardiac surgeon, to pursue a career in medicine. His strong work ethic and passion for surgery continue to guide his career.
