I've taught for most of my life. I came back in 1999 when the Daily News reported on Bronx kids not doing well in reading. I learned to read on Freeman Street in South Bronx in P.S.54 with Mrs. Silverman in 1964. I always read above grade level. How is it that 19 years education was worst than I was in elementary school??? That prompted my return and stay for about 20 years venture to teaching after 15 years in an array of positions in various business industries. For two decades, until 2017 it became a mix of research and being trapped in the complex system of public education. I taught the kids the individuals with personal goals didn't want to teach, who lived in addresses where some people didn't want to live. For every year that I taught my students showed measureable gains, except for one 2015-2016. That one year students had been one of the worst years in my teaching career. When my kids weren't suspended, they were absent or in financial, social, familial troubles at home. My contract was not renewed because my students didn't fair well. In other words teachers fail along with their students sometimes. No regrets, those students gave meaning and purpose to my life. It became a personal mission that anyone that came through the doors of the classrooms where I thought would be able to learn how to learn on their own and be able to access what they wanted in life. I have many of those students in my social media that are living meaningful and successful lives. And that makes my life richer than any valuation could. Now, in my never retiring mode I will through LiteracyLab Worx offer creative, innovative and effective learning opportunities for all who want to belong to a new culture, actually created by our diverse young population everywhere and have permitted me to learn with them because learning should be participatory and equitable.
